Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC)

LINC is a basic to advanced language and settlement program funded by Citizenship and Immigration Canada.

Students are assessed for their class level by the YMCA LINC Assessment Centre, using the Canadian Language Benchmarks. Our curriculum includes learning about Canadian life and culture, using English to learn more about accessing services they require, using the telephone, finding suitable housing, looking for a job, conversation practice and much more.

Eligibility or Prerequisite:
· Must be a Permanent or Landed Immigrant or a Convention Refugee.
· Assessment must be done by the YMCA LINC Assessment Centres.

Weekday Classes
Skills for Change offers full-time English classes for LINC 2-3 (basic), LINC 4 (intermediate), and LINC 5 (high intermediate) for listening, speaking, reading and writing. LINC 4/5 is a mid to high level conversation class with emphasis on everyday speaking. Each class is eight weeks long, from Monday to Friday during the day. A childminding service for children ages 18 months to 5 years old is available. Classes run from Monday to Friday, 9:00a-2:30p.

Evening/Saturday Classes
Evening classes for LINC 6-7 run Monday, Wednesday and Saturday as one class; also, another class runs Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday as the second class. This is a high-intermediate/advanced level with emphasis on higher grammar, conversation, presentations, computer/Internet access, and workplace culture. The classes are 8 weeks long. The weekday classes are from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., and the Saturday class from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. There is no childminding available for these classes.
