With 40 years of operations, Skills for Change is a highly respected nonprofit charity with a province-wide reputation for pioneering programs that respond to shifting immigration and workplace trends and lead to employment. We offer a range of accelerated programs, including mentoring, employment, settlement, and language training, together with specialized programs for skilled trades, women, and youth. We have 5 locations across the GTA and serve 16,000 clients annually.

Program Nature and Scope:

The Black Community Access Program and Strategic Initiatives (BCAP) Department within Skills for Change (SfC) was established to combat individual and systemic anti-Black racism by providing culturally competent programs and services to the members of the Black communities, including engaging in advocacy, community development, employment and skills development training, mental health, and other supports. Since 2020, the department has grown from one program to seven distinct programs, with several programs in development.

Major Duties May Include

● Being positive, helpful, and welcoming at all times

● Building relationships with youth and introducing them to other youth

● Supporting and guiding project participants.

● Engage in assisting project participants to achieve their career and professional goals.

● Guide youth project participants through experience sharing.

● Coach Black youth in developing new skills

Time Commitment:

● The program will be running for 12 weeks

● Must be available for 1-3 hours per week virtually (in-person option available)

● Must be available for orientation

Key Qualifications:

● Minimum age is 18

● Candidates age 18 and above will need to provide a Vulnerable Sector Screening form

from their local police service before their first day of mentoring

● Previous experience working with youth is an asset

● Ability to work with the Black community

● Have an understanding of anti-Black racism and situations of the Black community in

Canada.

● Clear understanding of the context of oppression, poverty, and diversity.

● Passionate about representation and Black empowerment
