- Arturo L. Corral
Arturo arrived in Canada
from the Philippines in September 2001 with his wife, Rosario. Being both
engineers the couple dreamt of being employed in their professional field.
Just a few weeks upon arrival in Canada, Arturo was lucky enough to have found
a job as a Spot/TIG welding operator, working evening shifts at a
Canadian-Japanese company.
But the dream of landing a job in his specific field of Metallurgical
engineering never left Arturo. Everyday, he would spend time job searching,
mainly using the powerful tool – the Internet.
In April, 2003, Arturo, together with his wife, decided to enroll in the
Quality Assurance and Control Training (QACT) program which is offered under
the
Tech@Skills program at Skills for Change.
With over 15 years experience in foundry operations and Quality Assurance and
Control, he knew that this course, which helps students prepare for the ASQ
certification exams, would help him in finding a job related to his education
and experience.
While attending the QACT program, students in the class apply for student
membership with American Society for Quality. The ultimate goal is to write
and pass the exam.
Finally, in late April, Arturo found a job posting at Monster.com for a
Quality Manager. Only the name of the company was provided, no contact person
or phone number was listed. By accessing the company website, he got more
information plus the name of the owner. He applied and was interviewed two
times.
Just a few days before graduation in the QACT program, Arturo Corral was
offered the job. He now works as a Quality Manager in a Foundry Company
located in the Durham region. His major responsibilities include design
tooling for optimum casting of iron-based metals, and monitoring and improving
the products utilizing quality techniques.
His job offer includes medical and dental benefits, and of course, a higher
salary than his previous job. To Arturo, this is the dream job.
Congratulations!
