Success Starts from Knowing and Adapting Yourself
I enrolled in the
STIC-IT program in September 2002. As an IT professional, I experienced the
frozen job market from the time I landed in Canada. When I started the STIC
program I was in my lowest mood and completely doubting if I was really needed
in Canada. However, as the program progressed I found myself applying the
interesting new information presented by our instructors.
Our teacher, Norma, asked us to analyze ourselves and reflect on our values.
In discussion groups, each of us discovered our unique skills by comparing
what we found with other team members. We began to realize that given the fast
changing job market here, our skills were in need of constant refinement so
that we could adapt ourselves to the ever changing job market and effectively
convey our value to prospective employers.
I adhered to these self-marketing points in the year following my graduation
from the STIC program. After one year’s hard work I enjoyed the fruits of my
labour. Recently, I was hired in IT as a Senior Information Analyst. I start
at the beginning of the new year.
Now if you were to ask how much I got from the STIC program, I would tell you,
“a lot”. The most important thing is this: the program gave me a great chance
to re-reflect on myself, to identify my unique value, and to re-direct my
career path in concert with my long term goals. It taught me how to plan for
and adapt to my future success. It can help you too.
