Employment Assistance Services (EAS)

Sukuya* was looking for a starting point. She found it in the EAS program. Originally from Kenya South Africa, she arrived in Canada December 2001. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and a Master in Human Resources Management from the University of Sanford in the United Kingdom. She enrolled in the Employment Assistant Services program in March 2002. Sukuya has solid experience in human resources & office administration. She worked as a Chief Personnel Officer in the Ministry of Environment & Natural Resources, Agriculture and Livestock in the Ministry Of Health in Kenya. She is Multilingual in English, French and Swahili.

With the assistance of her job developer she found a WEP placement as an Administrative Assistant at World Education Services (WES), a non-profit organization that provides assessment of foreign academic credentials. After finishing her placement successfully she was offered full time employment with WES with a starting salary of $26,000.00 per year. The following is a part of her thank you letter to our job developer…

I think that the Employment Assistance Program has played a big part in this as it give one the opportunity to get to know and experience the working life and to put their skills to the test!!! If no one gives you that chance people may never know that what you put on your resume is the truth? I guess it also works for the employer as they get a chance to really get to know and appreciate skills from outside the Country. All it needs is patience on the part of the new immigrants and a lot of flexibility combined with the assistance from Employment Assistance Services, to be able to find a starting point. I do not regret waiting to get into the Program and I have been recommending to my friends to do the same.

Thanks again and I will still appreciate any further advice you may have to give me.
