My
name is Sean Ali, and like the many that boarded the "wings of fortune" for a
better life, I immigrated to Canada in 2002.
Back in Guyana, I held positions such as Financial Accountant, Chief Internal
Auditor, Cost Accountant, Accountant and Assistant Accountant. My
qualifications include a Bachelors Degree in Accounting and ACCA (Chartered Accountant
-Finalist) from the UK.
For 2.5 months, I tried to console my thoughts that a job is coming around,
especially since the Internet had tons and tons of it. I joined EAS Program at
Skills for Change in May 2003. The EAS team offered me their dedicated
assistance, stating that "success comes to the warriors not the riders".
I started to get interviews due to my updated résumé and phone call techniques
I learned at EAS. My counsellor acted as a true mentor to me, and in one of
our appointments, she guided me towards researching companies in my field and
making cold calls.
I made contact with 49 companies, spending hours at YMCA phone, since I did
not have access to the phone at home. In 85% of the cases, I experienced
rejection.
Finally, I called this Company and was called to attend an interview, followed
by a second interview. I started working, two weeks after my cold call, as an
Accounts Receivable Administrator, with a company that is more than a dream.
With such hardworking and dedicated people like the EAS team at Skills for
Change, I would say that "they will take you somewhere".
