Employment Assistance Services (EAS)

Saul* arrived in Canada in December, 2002. He optimistically began to job search immediately, believing that his successful accounting career in Guyana would quickly open the door to a career-related position. After all, he had been given a CGA level 4 rating in Canada based on his standing with the Chartered Accountants association in the UK. His “old fashioned” résumé, mailed randomly, did not prompt any calls from prospective employers.

Saul, struggling to keep his discouragement under control, arrived at EAS in May 2003. He responded positively and quickly to the suggestions and warm interest he experienced from those on the EAS team. He was introduced to tools and techniques for job hunting in Canada, most notably how to create an attractive résumé, how to make cold calls and how to research companies he wanted to target in the Toronto Public Library. Responses began to happen. Saul kept upbeat even when he had contacted 49 companies and met with an 85% rejection rate.

In mid-June he made a cold call to one of his top dream companies. He was called for one, and then a second interview; within two weeks after making that cold call, Saul was on the company payroll as an Accounts Receivable Administrator.

Saul called his counsellor a true mentor when he wrote her an update, “Life may not work out the way you anticipated, but determination and proper guidance can pave a way. Having experienced this combination [of determination and guidance], I would say that people as dedicated and hard-working as the EAS team will take [any immigrant client] somewhere.”
