Employment Assistance Services (EAS)

Michael* came to Canada as a landed immigrant in December 2001. He is an Industrial Engineer with a Bachelor’s Degree in the field; however, in his work experience, he has mostly focused on commercial and plant management rather than technical aspects of engineering. He has always been interested in sales and commercial activities, and enjoys working and getting along well with people of different backgrounds and status (customers, managers, and unions).

When he first met with his employment counsellor at EAS, he emphasized on his desire to pursue his career in the technical sales & marketing of industrial products, starting as a Sales Representative and moving to more challenging positions such as Plant or Business Manager in the industrial field. To conduct an effective job search, he attended a number of EAS workshops including Cold Calling and Interview Skills. He also had two sessions of resume consultation and critique with his employment counsellor.

Before he even had his mock interview for more practice, he got a job interview, which resulted in his employment. By the end of April, less than a month after he joined EAS, he secured a job as Manager of Shipping/Receiving Department with an architectural products company. His salary base was not very high, but he was told that after three months of successful employment, his salary and benefits would be negotiated and discussed. He was also told that he had chances to grow and obtain positions with more responsibility within the company.
