Bodan*,
a financial industry specialist, came to Canada from Yugoslavia in the Fall of
2000. Almost a year later, he found himself slowly losing hope. He had sent
out over 80 resumes, contacted numerous employment agencies, knocked on the
doors of over 50 financial institutions and networked with numerous people, to
no avail. What he kept hearing over and over was that he lacked Canadian work
experience. So, he walked into Employment Assistance Services hoping to find a
volunteer placement in his field so that he could finally get that elusive
’Canadian work experience’.
Bodan certainly got more than he ever hoped for and he did it on his own. Not
only did he attend workshops on how to do job interviews and market himself to
potential employers over the telephone, he found employment in his field
without the need for a volunteer placement. Only two months in to the EAS
program, Bodan found a full-time job as a Collateral Analyst with a financial
institution earning 40K per year. What Bodan put into the program he certainly
got out of it - as he diligently attended all of the workshops he signed up
for and demonstrated an eagerness to learn all about looking for work in
Canada.
