Renovations at Skills for Change

by Jane Cullingworth
Executive Director

Max Tischler (right), owner of M.W.B. Contracting in Brampton, and Amir Halilovic, begin the installation of new flooring.

This is the season of great works at the agency.

We are undergoing a major overhaul to our beloved building at 791 St. Clair Avenue West.

Last year we chose a new colour scheme for Skills for Change – this has gone a long way to brightening up the space.

Clients and staff have commented on how colourful the space now looks. We are gradually making our way through the building, focusing initially on painting the public spaces and classrooms.

Over the holiday season we retiled and painted the back stairwell. We are now undergoing a major project to replace much of the flooring in the building – again focusing on public spaces and classrooms.

Please come by for a tour to see how our space is being transformed!

The work to the building would not have been possible without the contribution of many funders – these include Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC), the Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration (MCI), as well as the BMO Fountain of Hope.

We would also like to mention the generous contribution of Denise Chou from Flooring Design Outlet. Thank you all for helping to spruce up our space!

A National Review of Access to Professions and Trades
Processes for Immigrants

by Jane Cullingworth
Executive Director

In December last year Capacity Canada released “A National Review of Access to Professions and Trades (APT) Processes for Immigrants.” Capacity Canada is a network of immigrant driven initiatives across the country, working together to build a national policy roundtable of internationally educated professionals. One of the first initiatives of Capacity Canada has undertaken is a national review of APT processes across the country in order to best determine the next steps to address challenges with the processes.

The Review was done by the Centre for Research and Education in Human Services (CREHS), and was guided by a national steering committee made up of representatives across the country.

More information about Capacity Canada can be found at their website.

Recognizing Skills for Change Staff - Shabnum Budhwani

by Jane Cullingworth
Executive Director

Shabnum Budhwani, our Teach in Ontario Program Coordinator, participated in the Maytree Foundation’s Leaders for Change program in 2002-2003.  The program, which was launched in 1999, gives social activists and community leaders in the Toronto area the opportunity to build leadership skills, to identify and reflect on critical issues facing our society and to apply new knowledge and insights.

The Maytree Foundation has profiled 15 of the leaders who have participated in the program – including Shabnum.  Shabnum’s compassion and hard work are beautifully reflected in the article.  We encourage you to read Shabnum’s story, as well as the stories of 14 other inspiring individuals here.

Many congratulations to Shabnum!

Bridge to Success - JSW Conference

by Srna Stambuk

“Bridges to Success,” the Job Search Workshop (JSW) Conference was held at Ramada Hotel in Toronto on January 10th and 11th. Srna Stambuk and Jemima Sabapathy from Skills for Change attended. Plenary speakers and presenters included representatives from the Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC), COSTI, OCASI, TRIEC and employers.

It was a dynamic and timely conference, especially in light of the recent Canada-Ontario Immigration Agreement, which promised $920 million in funding over five years to give newcomers improved access to language training, orientation, referrals to community resources, employment services, interpretation and translation.

The atmosphere at the conference was hopeful and exhilarating. Speakers from various regulatory and funding bodies repeatedly stated that “the time is ripe for new initiatives and new ways of delivering services.” With a renewed mandate for assisting newcomers, funders are seeking advice from service providers and front line workers and there is greater flexibility around program delivery. All this is good news - not just for the sector but also for JSW as an established, successful and recognizable program with a strong track record of helping newcomers. There was even some talk of using the JSW model in the Canadian Immigration Integration Project – another initiative geared to helping newcomers prepare for integration into Canadian society while still overseas!

TD Bank, Bank of Montreal, Ontario Power Generation, Toronto Community Housing Corporation and York Region Police were among the employers present at the conference. The message from employers was also hopeful and positive – most seemed to be making formal and informal efforts to recruit and retain more newcomers, whether by educating managers about foreign credentials or by establishing formal diversity recruitment initiatives. Overall, it was an energizing conference. For additional information, please contact Jemima or Srna from the Job Search Workshop Program at Skills for Change.
