On behalf of the staff and Board of Skills for Change, we would like to wish everyone a healthy, happy holiday season.

We thank all our partners – community agencies, employers, government, foundations, community volunteers, educational institutions, occupational regulatory bodies to name a few – for your contribution to and support of our work.

We are stronger when we work together – and we are a more effective support to the many immigrants and refugees who come to our collective doors for guidance.

We look forward to our continued work together in 2007.

All the best,

Jane Cullingworth
Executive Director

Donating a Computer to SfC Helps our Clients

by Bill Waicus
Operations Manager

From time to time I'll receive an email asking if we accept computer donations.  The answer is definitely yes.

Clients are often in need of reliable machines for themselves or their children.

If you have a working Pentium 4 computer, with software installed, we'll be happy to see that your donation is put to good use.

Alison Wells of Mississauga writes about her donation of a computer to Skills for Change last month:

"I am so glad to know that the computer is going to be put to good use. It was a gift from my parent's when I was in college and I would feel awful if it wasn't going to someone who would appreciate it.

I "googled" computer donations in the GTA and came across your website. I was looking for a company just like yours that would be able find value in my computer. It was very easy to get in touch with you and even easier to donate since you picked it up!

I had attempted to sell my computer on a local advertising site but too many people were trying to make a deal with me and I really didn't need money for it, I just wanted to know that somebody would use it. So this worked out perfectly."

And from Sandra Pettey, and husband David Hughes, a short email describing how an upgrade led to a donation:

"Our family finally made the move to a flat screen monitor for our home desktop.

Our old monitor was in excellent shape - a 19" Sony Trinitron about 4 years old.

We knew that Skills for Change, like most non-profits, might benefit from a computer related donation for administration or program delivery purposes which lead to our decision to donate.

We encourage anyone thinking about upgrading their computer equipment to consider donating their used equipment to SfC."

STIC participants listening attentively to the guest speakers

Every two or three months the graduates of the Teach in Ontario, STIC program, get together for an evening of networking and fun. This is an opportunity to meet old friends, share success stories, learn from each other, get motivated and keep up the momentum of Job Searching which can sometimes be a long and exhausting process indeed.

That is why the theme of the F.U.N. (Follow-up Networking Night) on November 22, 2006 was “Celebrating Perseverance”.

A large number of friends and supporters of the program were in attendance including guest speakers Laura Elliot, Superintendent of Education (Pickering Schools) and Philip Arkoh-Forson Vice-Principal of Dunbarton High School in Pickering.

Their motivational speeches really energized everyone’s spirit.

Program Manager Carol Norton-Sargent and Guest Speakers Philip Arkoh-Forson and Laura Elliot

Philip’s story of his initial struggle from working in a warehouse to becoming a Vice-Principal was a living example of how perseverance and patience finally pays off. The passion and emotions that he stirred up in the room was really amazing, and helped to further strengthen everyone’s resolve to succeed more then ever before.

Internationally Educated Teacher and STIC graduate Mary Adigwe also gave a very inspiring speech and told of her struggles and how her patience was finally rewarded with a full time job as a teacher. “Don’t Ever Give Up” was her message to her fellow students.

Teach in Ontario Project Manager, Carol Norton-Sargent and Anne Cameron from the Peel District School Board were among the other distinguished guests in attendance at this gala.

The evening ended with lots of food, fun, games and most important of all renewed hope and a promise never to give up.
