Skills for Change was proud to be among
the thirteen recipients of a Vital Ideas 2006 grant, presented at a
reception hosted by the
Toronto Community Foundation
on April 25. The Toronto Community Foundation (TCF) helps philanthropic citizens establish endowment funds and invests these funds and charitable gifts from donors into a pooled income-earning fund. Each year TCF identifies areas of need in the community and supports donors to ensure grants from fund earnings will have the greatest impact on Toronto’s vital signs. The grant awarded to Skills for Change will allow us to create a new program: Essential Skills for Sector Access (ESSA). Building on the success of the Sector Terminology, Information and Counselling (STIC) Program initiated by Skills for Change and delivered to internationally-trained professionals for seven years, we will research and re-design the STIC training modules so that we can better meet the changing demographic needs of newcomers to Toronto. The resulting ESSA workshop formats and templates for five sectors can be easily replicated for other sectors. |

Is Skills for Change going to figure out
which came first: the chicken or the egg? No, we’re not actually going to solve this age-old riddle – but we are offering a new program to assist internationally-educated Agrologists. “What is an Agrologist?” you ask… When I first read the job description for a job developer (for the Agrologists’ program in the Enhanced Language Training program), I typed ‘Agrologist’ in Google’s search box. Of course, it’s . . . agrology . . . agriculture . . . . farming! Carol Tyler, Registrar of the Ontario Institute of Agrologists says that only two-per cent of the Canadian population works in food processing. Carol recognizes the need for agro-experts in Ontario and the rest of Canada, and welcomes the knowledge and experience of newcomers from all over the world. The Enhanced Language Training Program (ELT) begins its classes for Internationally-educated Agrologists on May 23/06. The program offers ten weeks of English enhancement, occupational terminology, job search skills and an option for mentoring and three-month job placement. We are now welcoming applicants to this exciting new program. |
