by Michelle Raposo On
Friday, March 17, 2006 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, job seekers roamed
The Assembly Hall Community Cultural Centre at 1 Colonel Samuel
Smith Park Drive searching for that perfect job opportunity. Over 600 job seekers attended this successful Community Services Information and Job Fair sponsored by the constituency offices of Laurel Broten, M.P.P Etobicoke-Lakeshore and Skills for Change. Jane Cullingworth, Executive Director of Skills for Change, and Laurel Broten, M.P.P., successfully launched the event with words of encouragement. The event, organized by Peter Tedoldi, provided a forum for job seekers to meet face-to-face with community organizations and employers. Skills for Change, ATEC, JobStart, JVS Toronto, LAMP CHC, MicroSkills, Toronto Social Services, YES Toronto, YMCA, Humber College, and the Ministry of Training, Colleges & Universities were all available to provide participants with information on their programs and services. Participants were also given an opportunity to attend 30-minute workshops facilitated by staff from Skills for Change on topics such as networking, portfolio development, resume writing and successful interviewing. Job seekers with resumes and business cards came prepared to introduce themselves to employers such as Accountemps, Canadian Forces, Adecco Employment, Canpar, Campbell’s Soup, City of Toronto, IKEA – Etobicoke, Intelligarde, Etobicoke Costco, Manpower, Gambles Ontario Produce, Metro Toronto Police, Nexus Staffing, Toronto Fire Services, SEIEA Universal Staffing, and Sobey’s. Job seekers successfully connected and networked with many employers. Frank, a student of the SfC Extended Language Training (ELT) for Internationally-trained Trades People pilot project, was encouraged by his instructor to attend this event. Within a few days, he accepted a job opportunity as a Millwright with Hunter Plastics Company in Etobicoke through Adecco. He credited his success to the ELT course and emphasized that the training helped him improve his communication skills. |
