Meaningful
Employment. A Chance to Give Back. |
|
by Shabnum Budhwani
The
Supreme Court of Canada has stated that “Work is one of the most
fundamental aspects in a person’s life, providing an individual with a
means of financial support and, as importantly, a contributory role in
society. A person’s employment is an essential component of his or her
sense of identity, self-worth and emotional well-being.”
When immigrants find meaningful employment, it helps them to live with
dignity and self-respect. It gives them an opportunity to contribute and
give back to their adopted country. They develop stronger ties and feel
a sense of belonging. They become full citizens of the country.
And yet when the skills and educational qualifications of
Internationally-trained Professionals are not recognized, the Canadian
economy suffers a loss of billions of dollars annually. [more]

'Riding
the Waves of Change' Cruise |
|
Riding the Waves of Change became an
ocean of fun.
On
September 8 Skills for Change had its first annual fundraising boat
cruise aboard the Northern Spirit at the Toronto Harbourfront. The
evening began with guests boarding the ship to the music of bagpipes.
Michael Prue MPP led a
lively Live Auction which followed the buffet dinner. Tickets to the
Toronto Film Festival, golf passes and donated original paintings were
among the items auctioned.
The West Coast Swing
dancers boogied around the dancing floor giving a lively performance
for guests. The “swing” got everybody in the party mood and people
danced until we reached the dock.
A very special thanks to our sponsor – Canada Pure.
Thanks also to IBM, Sunlife Financial, Deloitte and Touche LLP,
Institute of Chartered
Accountants of Ontario and the Canadian Union of Skilled Workers for
their support!

site development to more advanced accounting and database design.
Our courses are structured to encourage beginners and professionals to
start at the level that matches their skills and to lead them
progressively to more advanced topics. Because our classes are limited in
size, students have more hands-on interaction with the instructor.

Self-Directed Networking
Event for Administration, Business and Finance Job Seekers |
Join
us at the Dufferin Mall Employment Resource Centre’s Tuesday evening
networking sessions for Administration, Business and Finance job-seekers.
Sessions are held every Tuesday in October from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm.
Please
note that this is planned as a self-directed activity, a chance for
job-seekers interested in the same field of work to meet in an informal
setting, to exchange ideas and widen your network of acquaintances (you may
have heard that many jobs are obtained through informal networking, outside
of the official application process)!
You’ll be able to use our workshop room every Tuesday in August from
5:30-6:30 pm as a 'drop in' where you’ll meet fellow job-seekers each week.
Pre-register by calling 416-516-4689.
We look forward to seeing you on Tuesday evenings!
