SfC Wins Prestigious Community Learning Award

Skills for Change is the 2004 winner of the Conference Board of Canada’s Community Learning Award.

Roland Rhooms, SfC’s Manager of Programs and Services, accepted the award on the agency’s behalf April 29th in Montreal at the Board’s Partners 2004 Symposium: Finding the Power of Partnerships.

The Community Learning Award focuses on learning efforts that use information and technology to develop necessary skills and competencies. SfC was recognized for its use of technology to deliver its innovative sector specific employment programs. The Office of Learning Technologies of the Department of Human Resources and Skills Development Canada, along with the Conference Board, sponsor the award.

“This award reflects the importance of recognizing initiatives in the broader community that develop peoples' skills and competencies, so that they can achieve personal goals and contribute in both the labour market and the community," said Dr. Hany Moustapha, Senior Fellow and Manager, Pratt & Whitney Canada, and Master of Ceremonies for the awards.

"The Action Plan... worked!" - an SfC success story

Here's a letter recently received by Norma Bernal, a Facilitator/Counsellor with the STIC program:

Hello, Mrs. Norma,

I’m Delia, one of your former students from STIC Program for Health Professionals. I was there in the spring session of 2001. I don’t know if you remember me. I was a Romanian very pregnant woman, with glasses and curly hair.

I just want to let you know (with plenty of pride) that the Action Plan I prepared while in the STIC program, worked!

I’ve just become one of the foreign-trained doctors accepted to practice in Ontario. I’m starting my clerkship in two weeks (I’ve entered the program for foreign doctors at U of T), and I’ll start my residency next year. I still have some way to go, but I’m in the system, and that was the hardest part.

I’ve written to you because I’m very happy and I feel like sharing this with everybody. But not only because of that. When you help doctors in your program, it is really helpful for them to know that there really are foreign-trained doctors who make it. It might give them courage to fight all the way -  because it’s not easy.

I wish you all the best and hope to meet you again,

Sincerely,
Delia

Employment Resource Centre

Dufferin Mall Employment Resource CentreSix months into our 2004-05 contract, it is clear that it has been a busy year for Dufferin Mall ERC (DERC).

Clients have paid 4,417 more visits than estimated. Although contracted to deliver ten Special Speakers workshops, we actually hosted 26 sessions. Two Resource Officers delivered workshops off-site. Lynette Joseph co-developed and co-facilitated a workshop on Labour Market Information to ERC frontline staff at the 2004 ERC/IRS Forum. Nelson Briceno (aka Dr. Giggle) has presented his Laugh or Go Bananas to a variety of agencies and clients. More than 1,550 clients received one-on-one assistance with resumes and cover letters, computer use and interviews. The DERC E-Newsletter has 1,797 more subscribers and the DERC web site received 31,683 more visits than estimated.

Ninety-seven per cent of clients completing our Client Satisfaction Survey indicated that the service they received was good to excellent. They were especially appreciative of the convenient location, the free resources and equipment and the ERC staff: "The thing I like best about Dufferin Mall ERC is the excellent client service I have received. Everyone has been extremely helpful and approachable, and quite knowledgeable."
