Calling all STIC Graduates

If you graduated from any of the STIC programs – Engineering, Accounting, Healthcare, Information Technology, or Biotechnology - SFC would like to hear from you.

The Sector-Specific Employment Preparation Program began at Skills for Change in January 1998. The agency is conducting research on the outcomes of newcomers with integration into the Toronto labour market. In addition, the newly-created Skills for Change Graduate Network is developing programming in collaboration with the agency to develop networking and post-graduate opportunities.

Since many graduates move and change their address after finding that first job, we need to update your information in order to reach you. We would love to hear from you to see how you are succeeding.

To assist us, please forward your contact information, including home address, phone number, and e-mail to hughes@skillsforchange.org.

Volunteers Build Employer Database

Under the direction of David Hughes, Manager of Business Development and Administration, a team of newcomers is donating their time in helping with the research and populating of a new employer database.

This valuable resource will assist SfC job developers with reaching out to employers to secure positions and job placements for SfC clients and will expand our opportunities for reaching the corporate community for marketing our Human Resource Services for Employers.

The work of the volunteers has been exceptional. They include Alex Alexiev, Raju Erramilli, Amine Kara, Vitusha Oberoi, Abdelhamid, Elaine Zhong, Marc Holloran, and Alice Zhang.

Have you used www.onip.ca? If yes, please, tell us how you like it.
ONIP.online is undergoing a formal evaluation. Sheila Sim, our evaluation consultant, designed a fun and easy-to-use online survey for us. We would like to ask you to fill it in. Simply go to www.onip.ca, click on “Take our survey” at the top of the page, and then tick off your answers. It is a 10-minute job, and it provides us with invaluable information and direction for enhancing our services.

Have fun with the survey, and thank you for your efforts!

How to plan and use online discussions in your work with clients or professional networking?
Have you ever considered online discussion forums as a way of providing support to your clients, or for maintaining a professional network? If you want to learn more – check the discussion board of a London group of Online Facilitators on http://www.onip.ca/board/viewforum.php?f=15&sid=63d99f178751b6b279f9acde2b0fa0ac

The London Group was formed as part of the Skills for Change pilot project on Providing Distance Employment Services to Internationally-trained Professionals. The group of employment counselors and facilitators communicated through the discussion board on ONIP.online to learn more about discussion boards, and to plan their own online work with internationally-trained clients. The information accumulated in this process would be of use to anyone interested in providing services online.

The findings and learning from the pilot project will be published in the Service Providers section of www.onip.ca by the end of March.

Have you checked our Online Mentoring Program (link to www.onip.ca/mentroing) recently?
We have mentors waiting to support their internationally-trained colleagues. Go to www.onip.ca/mentoring to refer your clients with background in accounting, civil engineering, quality assurance, library sciences, teaching.

ONIP.online is a project of Skills for Change,
funded by Volunteer@ction.online
and the Ontario Trillium Foundation

n Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC)
The LINC program held its end of session graduation party. All four levels of classes attended the festivities with a bountiful array of cultural delicacies available. With the unseasonably warm weather, there seemed to be a hint of spring in the air and this was mirrored by the many plants and flowers that students brought to the graduation. There truly is a feeling that spring is just around the corner!

The LINC classes will resume with a new session starting on Monday, March 1, 2004 and continuing till April 23, 2004. Students are still being accepted in the LINC 3 level (low intermediate) and in the LINC 4-5 level (Conversation). For further information please call the receptionist at Skills for Change at (416) 658-3101, ext. 0.
