- SfC Goes the United
Way!
-
-
by Barbara Nero
-
-
In
October, Skills for Change began its United Way Campaign in earnest.
-
-
This year, the CN Tower Climb was elevated to
new heights - nine people made
- it to the top with over $500.00 in pledges.
-
- Congratulations to all the teams who
organized Bake Sales in October: CES
- and JSW partnered to raise $286.29, STIC
raised $158.23 and ERC raised
- $77.00
-
-
By
raffling off the Microsoft XP software donated by
Micro Second
Computer
- Inc., we earned $88.00.
-
- On October 25, Skills for Change hosted a
Days of Caring event; 25 job
- seekers benefited from the practice and
feedback they gained through mock
- interviews with volunteers from Canada Post.
-
- November promises to be equally busy with
three more bake sales, a flea
- market on November 28/29, another Day of
Caring on November 28, and a
- Bowl-a-thon on November 30.

Swedish Visit
-
by Jane Cullingworth
-
-
On
October 18, Ms. Lisa Burgh, Swedish Secretary of State, visited
Skills for Change.
Accompanying her were two staff from her ministry and Jeannine
Chauvette
(Regional Director Ontario, Status of Women).
The group met with Peggy Edwards and Jane Cullingworth of SfC
to discuss different approaches to settlement and employment in
Sweden and Canada. Sweden's state government has developed
agreements directly with municipalities; it is the municipalities
in Sweden that have primary responsibility for settlement
(including language instruction and employment).
Calling All SfC Graduates!
The
SfC Alumni Committee encourages active participation of program
graduates in supporting the work of SfC through social events or
fund-raising activities and in creating a network for information.
The
Alumni Committee held their first meeting on May 8, 2001. Since
then, a dedicated group of graduates have been meeting each month,
sharing ideas, information and experiences in order to promote the
mission of SfC. A work plan was developed and as a first step in
obtaining feedback from graduates, the Alumni Committee put their
heads together and developed a questionnaire to be conducted over
the telephone.
The results
of the telephone survey indicate that graduates are appreciative of
the services provided to them by SfC and are interested in receiving
the e-newsletter that would keep them in touch with the agency and
provide information on job opportunities.
