Skills for Change (SfC) is a non-profit agency based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.  Our mandate is to "provide learning and training opportunities for immigrants and refugees so that they can participate in the workplace and wider community".
Workshop June 11
Our ‘Making a Change Together: A Resource Handbook for Promoting Access to Professions and Trades for Foreign-Trained People in Ontario' handbook provides information and tools to help foreign-trained people, and groups interested in helping them, address the problems that have often prevented foreign-trained people from being effective change makers. The world in one city
Toronto is arguably the most multicultural city in the world. Every year, more than 70,000 new immigrants and refugees call the city home. In 1999 alone, they came from well over 100 countries.

Toronto has one-twelfth of Canada's population but one-quarter of the country's immigrants.

Immigration accounts for more than 92 percent of the city's total population growth.

One in five Torontonians arrived in Canada after 1981; one in ten arrived after 1991.

Toronto's citizens come from 169 countries and speak more than 100 languages (the top three foreign languages are Chinese, Italian and Portuguese).

Toronto's cultural and religious diversity is unmatched: Mass is now said in 35 languages; 200,000 Muslims observe Ramadan; 80,000 Sikhs march in the annual Khalsa Day celebrations; and the city is home to half of the country's Jews.

There are more visible minorities in Toronto than there are residents in any of the Atlantic provinces, Saskatchewan or Manitoba.

Skills for Change is moving with the times and with technology! Skills for Change has developed a website to better assist employers with their staffing needs.

JobReady is a new service that allows employers to browse client resumes on the internet. Profiles and detailed resumes of highly skilled graduates are arranged by occupation type (including administration, customer service, finance/accounting, IT, engineering and health care), and are updated on a regular basis. All clients who are listed on the website are seeking either paid employment or Work Experience Placements. In addition, each client profile is directly linked to their respective Job Developer’s contact information.

The SfC Job Developers Unit (comprised of Job Developers from the Clerical Employment Service, Sector-Specific Terminology, Information and Counselling, and Employment Assistance Services programs) provides the following services to employers:

Screening and referral of job candidates

Work Experience Programs (WEPs) that provide six to twelve weeks of volunteer placement

On-site recruitment at Skills for Change, including information sessions and job fairs

Professional Development opportunities for your staff to build their cross-cultural skills for today's diverse workplace including becoming a mentor for a foreign-trained professional

JobReady offers employers a quick, efficient method of accessing the wealth of clients that Skills for Change has to offer.

Additional resumes and profiles can be viewed at the New Canadians Program web site.
