Volume II.  Issue 4.  May 5, 2001
Skills for Change (SfC) is a non-profit agency based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.  Our mandate is to "provide learning and training opportunities for immigrants and refugees so that they can participate in the workplace and wider community".
Province wide workshops
Skills for Change and the Centre for Research in Education and Human Services (CREHS) have partnered together to bring you ‘Making a Change Together: A Resource Handbook for Promoting Access to Professions and Trades for Foreign-Trained People in Ontario'. The project was funded by Access to Professions and Trades Unit of the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities and Canadian Heritage.

The need for giving foreign-trained people the recognition for their occupational expertise is a growing concern in Ontario, especially when many sectors of our economy are in dire need of skilled professionals and tradespeople. The Handbook provides information and tools to help foreign-trained people, and groups interested in helping them, address the problems that have often prevented foreign-trained people from being effective change makers.

The Handbook took over two years to develop and we are now ready to promote and distribute it in various cities throughout Ontario. Skills for Change will be at the following locations promoting the Handbook through a one-day workshop:

May 30th, 2001 - Ottawa

Certification and licensing binders on sale again
In March 1998, SfC developed the Certification & Licensing 101: An introduction to the Regulated Trades and Professions in Ontario for a variety of people who provide support and information to foreign-trained immigrants and refugees. A review of the manual has been recently conducted and most of the information contained is still very relevant in assisting foreign-trained immigrants access their professions and trades.

The manual contains:

Terminology of the trades and professions

Description of the stakeholders

The regulated trades, which includes the certification process

The regulated professions, which includes the licensing process

Issues of access to professions and trades

Strategies to affect change in the trades and professions

We do stress, however, that to obtain detailed AND up-to-date certification information, please contact the licensing body. For each of the twenty-one information sheets in which a regulated profession in Ontario is profiled, web-sites and phone numbers of the licensing body is provided. If you would like to purchase one of these binders please contact Skills for Change at 658-3101. The cost for each binder is $28.75 (inclusive of taxes), $33.75 if you need it mailed to you. We have approximately 200 binders left and all purchases will be made on a first come, first serve basis. The information sheets can also be downloaded free of charge from our website.
