NPA – another success!
The 9th annual New Pioneers Awards was a tremendous success. A week prior to March 22, 2001, the event had sold out and we had achieved a 28% increase in our ticket sales.

We kept to the tradition of screening vignettes of the recipients that told remarkable stories. Citytv’s Crime Specialist Dwight Drummond was the awards’ host. As Official Television Sponsor of the 9th New Pioneers Awards, Citytv ran feature stories on the awards and on Skills for Change through the day and did an in depth coverage of the awards ceremony on the 11 o’clock news. (Video clips can be downloaded from our web site). CFMT, Global and CTV also sent their reporters and cameramen to cover the awards.

Report released: "Access for Foreign-trained IT Professionals"
The "Access for Foreign-Trained IT Professionals: An Exploration of Systemic Barriers to Employment" research project report, prepared by Skills for Change and JobStart, has just been released. It attempts to identify the nature and scope of barriers and develop workable solutions

The report details a serious skill shortage in the Information Technology Sector. Industry officials project up to 30,000 jobs will remain unfilled this year in the software sector alone. However, a steady stream of highly skilled IT professionals immigrating to Canada are finding it difficult to access employment opportunities commensurate with their skills and experience in the IT field. Systemic barriers may be limiting foreign-trained professionals who have the potential skills and experience to address the hiring needs of Canadian employers.

The full report (in .pdf format) is available for download.  Email
