About the Awards

Many years ago, Skills for Change recognized the need to raise public awareness about the contributions made by immigrants and refugees to Canadian communities. As a result, we created the New Pioneers Awards as a vehicle to positively and publicly recognize newcomers and their achievements.

Each year, the New Pioneers Awards (NPA) showcases the outstanding contributions made by immigrants and refugees in six main areas of accomplishment in:

 Arts
 Community Service
 Entrepreneurship
 Science and Technology
 Youth
 Skills for Change Graduate

Today, the New Pioneers Awards has become GTA’s landmark Celebration of Diversity.

The NPA is a community driven event; members of the community nominate worthy candidates, community volunteers conduct the selection process, and both corporations and the GTA community gather at the awards gala event to celebrate with NPA award recipients.

Over the past fifteen years, the New Pioneers Awards has received strong support from all three levels of government, the corporate sector, the community, and from individual supporters of Skills for Change.
