Pioneers for Change: June 5, 2012

Electrical and millwright

Next session starts June 11, 2012.

The Maintenance Electro Mechanic program is for internationally experienced construction and maintenance electricians, industrial electricians, industrial mechanics and millwrights who are currently registered with Toronto Employment and Social Services.

The program runs for 18-weeks and includes six weeks of work placement. You will build your workplace experience and get hands on training, exam and employment preparation. The program leads to a Certificate of Qualification.

What will I learn?

Module I

  • Sector overview and orientation
  • Occupational terminology and communication
  • Microsoft Office and internet
  • Labour Market Information
  • Career Planning and job search
  • Individual counseling and job development

Module II

  • Technical training in the areas of construction and maintenance electrician, Industrial Electrician, Industrial Mechanic and Millwright
  • Trades regulation and certification
  • Certificate of Qualification exam preparation

Employment strategies

This program includes placement services. You will be connected with a job developer who is dedicated to finding the employment opportunities that are a right fit between you. The job developer will assess your skills, experience, and employment requirements, and introduce you to prospective employers.

Employment strategies include:

  • Six week unpaid work placement (Canadian work experience)
  • Life skills coaching and interpersonal development
  • Workplace communication
  • Labour market information
  • Job search techniques
  • Interview coaching
  • Employment placement support for six months

Is this course for me?

You must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Currently on social assistance
  • Canadian citizen born outside of Canada, permanent resident, refugee claimant, or convention refugee*
  • Eligible to work in Canada (must have a valid work permit)
  • Mandatory five years of work experience from country of origin in one of the above trade sectors (required by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities)
  • Intermediate level of English (CLB 7)
  • Familiar with Microsoft Office
  • Willing to commit to entire duration of the program

* Priority will be given to clients who have been in Canada for less than 5 years

Time: Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
