Over the past 18 years, the Mentoring for Change program has progressed from a stand-alone to include a wide variety of professional sector, settlement and language needs to support newcomer job seekers access their profession in Canada. In order to extend our reach to include more participants, we are now offering e-mentoring.
An increasing number of newcomers settling in the province of Ontario are highly-skilled professionals who are unable to find suitable employment. They face significant barriers due to the nature of Ontario's accreditation and licensing procedures, employment practices, limited knowledge of local industries and employment practices, lack of professional networks and contacts, and lack of knowledge of Canadian workplace culture. Mentoring was developed as an intervention to address some of these needs.
The Mentoring for Change program matches Internationally Educated Professional newcomers, mentees, with individuals who have a strong background in the same professional field coupled with years of Canadian experience (mentors). Mentors provide information on labor market trends, accreditation and licensing procedures, and offer support and guidance to help mentees in their efforts to settle in Canada and ultimately find employment in their professional field. The program allows mentors and mentees to interact through a secured online environment or through face to face contact.
Skills for Change strongly embraces mentoring support to individuals who are establishing themselves in Canada. We encourage you to participate in mentoring by registering to be a mentor or a mentee.
